Fibroid Surgery

What is Fibroid Removal Surgery?

Fibroids are the most frequently seen tumors of the female reproductive system and more than 99 percent of the time the tumors are benign (non-cancerous). Though most are benign, they may range in size and can cause heavy periods, pelvic pressure, bloating, urinary frequency, and constipation. Treatments can vary depending on the patient’s age, symptoms, previous treatments and successes, and desire to have children. The treatment options for fibroid removal are:

  1. Hysterectomy
  2. Myomectomy
  3. Uterine Fibroid Embolization

1. How is Myomectomy surgery performed?

A myomectomy is a surgery to remove fibroids without taking the uterus. It is best for women who wish to have children after treatment for their fibroids. This procedure is considered the standard of care for removing fibroids and preserving the uterus. A myomectomy can be done one of three ways:

  • Abdominal myomectomy allows your surgeon to remove your fibroids through an open surgical cut in your lower belly. Once the horizontal or vertical incision is made, your surgeon will remove your fibroids. This procedure would be preferred if you have many or very large fibroids. Recovery time would be four to six weeks.

  • Laparoscopic myomectomy allows your surgeon to remove your fibroids through several small incisions. This may be done robotically. It’s less invasive and recovery is faster than with abdominal myomectomy.  This procedure would be preferred if you have smaller and fewer fibroids. Recovery time would be two to four weeks.

  • Vaginal myomectomy allows your surgeon to remove your fibroids through your vagina and cervix. This procedure would be preferred if you have smaller fibroids inside your uterus. Recovery time would be two to three days.

2. How is Hysterectomy surgery performed?

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a woman’s uterus. The doctor may also remove the ovaries and the fallopian tubes during the procedure. Once you’ve had a hysterectomy, you’ll stop having menstrual periods. You’ll also be unable to get pregnant. After your hysterectomy, you’ll need to spend two to five days in the hospital A hysterectomy can be done one of three ways:

  • Abdominal hysterectomy allows your surgeon to remove your uterus through an open surgical cut in your lower belly. The incision may be vertical or horizontal. Recovery time will be about four to six weeks.

  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy allows your surgeon to remove your uterus through several small incisions.

  • Vaginal hysterectomy allows your surgeon to remove your uterus through your vagina. There are no external cuts, so there won’t be any visible scars.

3. How is Uterine Fibroid Embolization performed?

Uterine Fibroid Embolization is performed by an interventional radiologist. A small incision of 2-3mm is made in the groin area to stop the blood supply to fibroids. Uterine Fibroid Embolization is effective for multiple and large fibroids. This procedure is a minimally invasive day care procedure performed under local anaesthesia and it involves less post-operative complications. The benefits of Uterine Fibroid Embolization

  • Your uterus remains preserved
  • It’s a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment option for uterine fibroids
  • Reduced recovery time
  • Lower complication rate
