What is TrueBeam Linear Accelerator (LINAC)?
The TrueBeam™ Linear Accelerator system is the latest and advanced technology in radiotherapy. The LINAC machine are also known by the brand name of the manufacturer namely “CyberKnife and TrueBeam”. These machines can perform stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in three to five sessions for larger tumors which are known as fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy. The LINAC is used to deliver all forms of advanced radiotherapy modalities including Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) and Image-Guided Radiosurgery (IGRS), Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Volumetric Intensity Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT, or RapidArc) and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) along with conventional and 3D conformal radiotherapy.
The TrueBeam allows us to accurately target the tissue and destroy that tissue with a high dose of radiation while preserving the normal tissue adjusting to that region. True beam can give fewer treatments with a higher radiation dose and spare the normal tissue which gives the patient better outcome in a shorter period. It can even rotate to deliver treatment from nearly any angle giving some patients a new way to fight cancer. TrueBeam is usually painless. True beam can treat all tumor types.

How does TrueBeam Linear Accelerator (LINAC) work?
TrueBeam has an On-Board Imaging system which is controlled by two robotic arms that rotate around you, generating 3D images to confirm the location of the tumor. TrueBeam then provides an accurate form of 3D radiation dose as it rotates 360º around you. Some tumors move when you breathe in and out. This technology has a “respiratory gating” option which helps to maintain accuracy by synchronizing the beam delivery while breathing.
How is a TrueBeam Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Performed?
-
Step 1 – You will be asked to lie on your back on top of the table. Music can be played during treatment which will help the patient to be comfortable.
-
Step 2 – Linear accelerator (LINAC) machine moves around the patient to deliver a prescribed radiation dose from nearly any angle and targets the disease with submillimeter accuracy.
-
Step 3 – LINAC machine are so finely tuned that you can have the patient for a shorter period and it would last 5 minutes to 20 minutes.
-
Step 4 – LINAC machine delivers high-energy x-rays or electrons to the region of the patient’s tumor. This is designed to destroy the cancer cells while sparing the surrounding normal tissue.
-
Step 5 – The tumor shrinks.
**TrueBeam is not appropriate for all cancers. The side effects including fatigue and skin irritation may occur.

TrueBeam is a powerful non-invasive radiosurgery system that opens up treatment options for some of the most complex cancers in areas such as the lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, brain and spine.
-
Treats challenging cancers such as brain cancer, spine cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer, pancreas cancer and prostate cancer.
-
TrueBeam’s technology targets the disease with submillimeter accuracy and performing accuracy checks every ten milliseconds throughout the entire treatment.
-
Some tumors move when you breathe in and out. This technology’s “respiratory gating” option helps to maintain accuracy by synchronizing the beam delivery while breathing.
-
A complex radiosurgery treatment generally takes 30 to 60 minutes but TrueBeam’s technology can be completed within a few minutes per day (approximately 5 minutes to 20 minutes)
-
TrueBeam radiotherapy system helps patients to heal in fewer sessions such as one to five for a patient compared to 20 to 40 sessions of conventional radiation therapy (depending upon the size and type of tumor)
