Deformity Correction

What are Deformity Conditions?

Deformities are injuries and diseases that affect the musculoskeletal system. The body system includes the muscles, bones, nerves, joints, ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissues. Damage to any of these tissues or structures can come from a congenital condition or from an injury. Some of the Deformity Conditions are mentioned below:

  • Hammertoe – The bend is in the second (or middle) toe joint.
  • Knock knees or genu valgum
  • Hallux valgus or Bunion
  • Bow leg or Genu Varum
  • Clubfoot
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Planovalgus foot
  • Cavus foot
  • Equinus deformity
  • Hallux varus
  • Clubhand
  • Haglund’s deformity
  • Boutonnière Deformity
  • Serious Injuries of the Leg or Arm – Bone Loss, Mutilating Limb Injuries, Open fractures, Fractures with infection, Fractures with extensive soft tissue injury, Vascular injury.
  • Leg Shortening after Fracture – Malunions – When bones heal in abnormal position.
  • Leg / Arm Shortening and Leg / Arm Deformity Since Birth – Congenital Limb Shortening and deformities such as Hemiatrophy, Fibular Hemimelia, Tibial Hemimelia.
  • Osteoarthritis

Understanding Deformity Conditions

Hammertoe Correction:

A Hammertoe is a joint on your toe which points up instead of lying flat (see ref pic). A primary cause of Hammer toes is toes squashed by poorly fitting shoes or worsened by hallux valgus or Bunion. This deformity occurs when the muscles in your foot or leg get weak and the tendons to your toe pull abnormally. This causes pain at the top of the bent toe and a corn or callus may appear on top of the joint. Eventually, you may be unable to move the affected toe.

During the Hammertoe correction surgery, the surgeon may remove the bony prominence on your toe and align the joint or insert a steel pin to correct your toe’s position.

Knock Knees Correction:

Knock knees is also known as Genu Valgum. It is a Knee misalignment which turns your knees inward. When children with knock knees stand with their knees together, there’s a gap between their ankles. The gap is because their knees are bent inwards. Knock knees develop from an injury or infection in your knee and severe lack of vitamin D and calcium levels.

If Knock knee is severe, or when exercise is not sufficient to relieve pain and stabilize your knee then Knock knee correction is recommended.

In this correction surgery, a small metal plate is inserted in their knee that can help correct future bone growth. After the bone growth is corrected, the plate is removed when the bone growth is corrected.

Hallux Valgus Correction:

Pressure from the way you walk or your foot shape can cause a condition called Hallux Valgus. It is commonly identified with a protruding big toe. A painful bony lump on the outside of the big toe is called Hallux Valgus. When a person wears narrow shoes and stands for longer period makes bunion pain worse. If bunion pads, toe spacers and better-fitting shoes don’t help, you may need a bunionectomy.

Hallux Valgus Correction or Bunionectomy is a surgical procedure that moves the big toe back to its natural position. The Surgeon makes an incision to realign and possibly remove portions of bone, ligaments, and tendons of the affected foot based upon the severity of the bunion.

Bow Leg Correction:

Bow legs are a condition in which a person’s legs appear bowed out, which means that their knees stay wide apart, even when their ankles are together. Bowlegs are also medically known as Congenital Genu Varum. Bowlegs can sometimes be a sign of an underlying disease, such as Blount’s disease or Rickets, and may lead to Arthritis in the knees and hips.

Bow leg correction surgery realigns the tibia by cutting it into the bone and reshaping it. This relieves the pressure on your knee. However, if you have bow legs, then osteotomy surgery can also help to prevent, or at least delay, the need for Total Knee Replacement surgery in the future.

Cavus Foot Correction:

When you have high arches, one or both heels are usually tilted toward the middle of your body. This causes foot and ankle instability, which can cause pain and increase your risk of ankle sprains, according to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. High arch feet could be genetic or caused by a number of underlying conditions. High foot arches are much less common than flat feet. They can be caused by a bone (orthopedic) or nerve (neurological) condition. People with high arches may experience pain, and in some cases, occasional discomfort to permanent skeletal issues due to stress placed on the section of the foot between the ankle and toes.

Cavus Foot Correction may alter tendons or remove bone from certain areas of the foot. In serious cases, joint fusion may be necessary.

Clubfoot Correction:

Clubfoot is a deformity of the foot when one or both feet are turned inward. This condition affects the bones, muscles, tendons, and blood vessels. Clubfoot is often present from birth and most children with clubfoot have it in both feet and it is called Bilateral Clubfoot. Clubfoot remains in deformed position, and it is difficult for a child to walk. Clubfoot correction is performed to correct the clubfoot and align the foot to a normal position.

The Clubfoot correction surgical procedure consists of releasing and lengthening the tight tendons and muscles of the foot. The surgery involves inserting small pins, which are removed 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. After surgery, the foot will need casting for another six to twelve weeks. The casting may be followed by full-time or night-time use of braces as recommended by the surgeon.

Hallux Varus Correction Surgery:

Hallux Varus is a condition when the big toe points away from the second toe (see ref pic). This condition is linked to a number of causes including tight or short abductor hallucis tendons, congenital deformity, trauma, injury, or an absence or surgical removal of a fibular sesamoid.

Hallux Varus Correction Surgery is performed by a small incision made on the side of the toe to realign and straighten the position.

External Tibial Torsion Correction:

External Tibial Torsion is the twisting of a child’s shinbone or tibia. When a toddler’s legs and feet are turned inward, it is a case of internal tibial torsion), giving them a pigeon-toed appearance. And when it is turned outwards, it is called external tibial torsion. This is due to tight ligaments and tendons in the upper leg that causes the lower leg to twist as a child grows.

In External Tibial Torsion Correction, the surgeon cuts the tibia bone to correct the rotation. In rare cases, the fibula bone also needs to be corrected. The bones will be fixed in place with pins or a plate and screws while the bone takes time to heal.
