Patients in the US facing renal transplantation have
several major concerns:

  • Overwhelming Transplant Costs:

Even with good health insurance, your Out-Of-Pocket (OOP) expenses for a kidney transplant (costing $450,000) in the US can be multiple times that of India ($14000-$20000).

  • Insurance Claim Nightmare:

Navigating insurance approvals, deductibles, co-pays, and potential denials is a nightmare. Many policies do not cover out-of-network expenses such as anesthesiologist, assistant surgeon, lab work, etc. Some are even under-insured or uninsured leading to further suffering.

  • Life-long Out-of-Pocket Maximums:

While OOP maximums exist, they reset annually, making multi-year care (common with transplants) incredibly expensive.

  • Lifetime Medication Costs (Immunosuppressants):

The average annual cost for all outpatient drugs post-transplant (including immunosuppressants) can be an average of $18,200 for Kidney Transplant patients. This ongoing cost of drugs can bankrupt families in the long term.

  • No Medicare

Most patients are not eligible for medicare due to their age being less than 65 or not considered to be at End-stage renal disease (ESRD)

What tests are done to find a matching donor?

There are three main blood tests done to check for compatibility between donor and recipient:

  • Blood type test – This makes sure the donor’s blood type and the recipient’s blood type are a good match increasing the chances for a successful kidney transplant.
  • Crossmatch test – Doctors mix a sample of the donor’s blood with a sample of the recipient’s to see how they react. If there are no complications chances of risks are greatly reduced.
  • Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) Test – HLA testing identifies the specific HLA antigens present in the recipient’s cells, which are markers that can trigger an immune response if they don’t match the donor’s antigens. The test compares the recipient’s HLA type with potential donors to find the best match, minimizing the risk of rejection.
