What are the major operations of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeries?
A range of oral and maxillofacial surgical operations are carried out on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia include: pre-implant surgery placement of dental implants, removal of impacted teeth, intra-oral and facial soft tissue procedures. But the following major operations are carried out on an inpatient basis, under general anesthesia.
Head and Neck Cancer
Orofacial cancer is fatal if left untreated. It begins with a rough patch, lump or ulcer which develops on the tongue or on the floor of the mouth. These lesions usually tend to spread to the lymph nodes in the neck and the patient usually requires surgical resection of the tumor, followed by reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation.
Corrective Jaw (Orthognathic) Surgery
Orthognathic surgery is a surgery to create straight jaws and to restore normal facial appearance. The bones of the face and jaw will be reshaped and adjusted, and the jaws and teeth will be realigned.
Cleft and Craniofacial surgery
This condition affects the hard and soft tissue in the face and head. The craniofacial conditions include the following:
- Craniosynostoses – The premature closing of the joints between the bones in a baby’s skull
- Craniofacial dysotosis syndromes – This condition causes the skull to form a tall, wide shape.
- Cranio-facial clefts – a large group of defects like cleft lip and palate to extensive clefts with significant malformation.
All of the above conditions involve a multidisciplinary team that combines neurosurgery and maxillofacial reconstruction.
Dentalalveolar surgery
This refers to the problems involving the teeth and the tissue that surrounds them. The procedure includes the following:
- Surgical removal of teeth due to decay
- Removal of wisdom teeth
- Removal of cysts in the jaw
- Tooth transplantation, where a buried or impacted tooth will be removed and repositioned to fill a gap created by a lost tooth.
- Pre-orthodontic surgery – aside from removing impacted teeth, these teeth will be exposed through surgical removal of the overlying gum tissue or bone.
- Pre-prosthetic surgery, which refers to procedures to construct or improve the function of dentures.
- Dental implants – To replace missing teeth using a crown, denture or bridge.
Oral Treatment
Disorders of the oral mucosa are common and they include ulcers, blistering, sore mouth and red and white patches.
Maxillofacial Trauma
Trauma to the head, neck and face range from simple injuries such as small cuts or loose teeth due to complex injuries involving the nerves or brain. Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons manage such injuries in a variety of settings and they provide complicated craniofacial reconstruction.
Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery
Reconstructive surgery restores the function of bone, nerves, and other tissues from other parts of the body to reconstruct the jaws and face. The common procedures performed in Cosmetic Surgery include the following:
- Rhinoplasty is a procedure to adjust the size or shape of the nose and its function
- Genioplasty is a procedure to address chin deformity
- Pinnaplasty is a procedure to correct a condition referred to as “bat ears”
- Cosmetic Procedures to improve appearance and reverse the signs of ageing, such as forehead lift; blepharoplasty to remove “eye bags;” Reshaping the lips and face lift.
In addition to the above procedures, oral and maxillofacial surgeons may be called to consult with cases of removal of lesions, and diagnosing and treating oral cancers.
